What we’re reading: 2 recommendations + 2 free online PDFs from Katie
This year, one of my goals is to read more classics or cross off books from my “I want to read” list that I’ve been putting off for almost a decade now.
I recently crossed Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi off my list, and Beloved by Toni Morrison is a very slow work in progress.
Inside cover of my beautifully convenient free PDF version of Persepolis.
In college, we did a very brief study of Embroideries by Marjane Satrapi that I hardly remember aside from the fact that I liked it. We were also shown clips from the 2007 movie version, but never the full thing. My friend started reading it and I was inspired; I guess I’d forgotten I had free will and didn’t need to wait to read it anymore. We finally chose it for our book club, and I read it within a week. I couldn’t put it down — I was reading it in line at the coffee shop, on the bus, anywhere and everywhere. I’m not so into graphic novels but this one sucked me in. I plan on saving more of my thoughts for later, so until then, here’s your free copy. Read it and report back to me, please!
Behold, it’s Beloved by Toni Morrison.
I am obsessed with Toni Morrison. I picked up Sula when I saw it in the bookstore and wondered for the first time how I have a whole literature degree and never once read Toni Morrison, or even heard her name mentioned (I feel like I would’ve remembered). This is an absolute CRIME. But I also feel lucky to get to read her books for the first time, so I’m happy I saved them for later.
After Sula, I read The Bluest Eye, which also wrecked me. I’m only a quarter of the way through Beloved and it’s already turning out to be my favorite of the three. I will say more about it when I’m done, but for now — read it with me?
If you have any recommendations (or, if you want to start an impromptu book club), our inbox is always open and we love to make friends. °❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・
